Dishwash Powder

For quite some time I have been wanting to make Dish wash powder myself but I have never been able to get the results I wanted i.e clean glasses, plates etc. Everything has come out cloudy. So frustrating!

Most dishwasher powders and detergents have artificial fragrances in them which is a big red flag for phthalates- endocrine disruptors. You will notice this when you open the door at the end of the cycle and are greeted with a strong artificial smell, not something I wanted my dishes coated with.

Some powders include Chlorine based bleaches which are not great for your digestive tract, and also kill off organisms in the environment which is why chlorine bleach is used in swimming pools.

Colours in your dishwasher powders are simply artificial, more than likely derived from petroleum with small amounts always left on your dishes. No thank you.

Finally I have come up with a mix that I am happy with

Ingredients

Mix all ingredients in a stainless steel bowl and store in either a glass jar or repurposed container.

Use 1-2 tablespoons per wash.

For best results

  1. don’t overload your dishwasher
  2. rinse dishes of large particles of food before hand
  3. use hot water

Results will vary depending on the hardness of your water. Hot water works better as there are no harsh chemicals used to clean your dishes.

For bulk supplies of salts I like to shop at Blants. Bulk goods come in handy for cleaning, bath bombs, bath salts, scrubs. otherwise try your local health food shop or hardware store.

If making your own is not your thing, because it is not everyone’s I love the Ecostore powder. The best low tox option that I have found from the supermarket.

3 Reasons not to use Bleach

Bleach for many of us means Chlorine Bleach. It has been used to disinfect surfaces and remove stains and whiten clothes. Chlorine bleach is typically a solution of sodium hydrochloride. There are so many reasons not to use it in your home and here is my take on the top 3.

  1. It is bad for your health. As reported in the Sydney Morning herald Passive exposure to Chlorine bleach has been linked to an increase in cases of Flu, tonsillitis and other infections in school aged children. This Research was published in the British Medical Journal’s Occupational and Environmental Medicine and was performed across 3 countries and included over 9000 children. Another study published by the American Journal of critical care medicine, concluded that Women cleaning at home or working as occupational cleaners had accelerated decline in lung function, suggesting that exposures related to cleaning activities may constitute a risk to long-term respiratory health(source). This is such a worry for many women and men who are the responsible party for cleaning their homes in addition to the cleaning workforce. Another potential problem of using Chlorine Bleach is that it can react with other Cleaning products producing toxic gases, chloramine.
  2. It is bad for the Environment. Chlorine is released into waterways via sewage. Once it reaches the water, chlorine reacts with other minerals and elements to form a host of dangerous toxins. These toxins, including dioxins, furams and PCDDs are often referred to as “persistent organic pollutants” because they linger in the water or soil and take many years to disappear. (source)
  3. There are other, safer alternatives. How do I whiten my clothes and clean my home? the answer is Hydrogen Peroxide or Sodium Percarbonate and plant based cleaners. Hydrogen peroxide available from your local Pharmacy, or the powdered form Sodium Percarbonate ( purchase here). Hydrogen peroxide is a double Hydrogen Oxygen compound that is used as an oxidiser, bleaching agent and antiseptic. Sodium Percarbonate breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and soda ash in water and in powdered form makes it an easy addition to laundry. Thieves household cleaner is my all time favourite plant based cleaner that actually works infused with a blend of essential oils that are perfect for cleaning your home.

For liquid bleach try this recipe I love  sodium percarbonate as I can easily add a tsp to my washing detergent and my whites are brighter. A little bit goes a long way. You will also be avoiding synthetic fragrance as most supermarket products have synthetic fragrance included- I only use Essential oils as synthetic fragrance can have any number of chemicals and are known endocrine disruptors! (source)

Removing stains- try some bi-carb soda and half a lemon. One of the simplest low tox cleaners you can try and you probably have both ingredients in your kitchen. If you don’t have lemons try some Lemon Essential Oil. I use this frequently to clean my sink and it smells great.

Surface disinfection. I get it, you have been cooking, maybe with chicken or other meat (if you choose) and you want to make sure there are no nasties growing on your bench. For this I have a spray bottle with  Thieves Household Cleaner. Do I need a study to verify it? Well actually there are many which show anti-microbial effects of essential oils, like this one. or watch here Did I ever check about Bleach or the health effects? No I did not, but I wish I did!

What is it? Thieves Household Cleaner is a plant based essential oil infused concentrate that I use to clean my bathroom, kitchen, dishwasher, car, washing machine, floors, everything. The other thing I like about it is it is biodegradable and complies with EPA standards. It is economical and it works. You can even clean your dog with it.

Check out my Thieves recipes here A versatile and affordable concentrate that you can use on all surfaces of your home. To get your hands on the Thieves household cleaner, simply purchase from Your Young Living account or open one here The Thieves healthy home starter kit will set you up!

I encourage you to re-think why you use what you use in your home.

Choose Kindness

Last week I went to the Cinema to see Wonder. A fabuous Movie based on a book by R.J Palacio. This book is all about bullying of a young Boy who was born with facial deformities. I read the book prior to the Movie and thought it was a good thing to do on a hot day in the school holidays. I also thought it would be good for my children to see the Movie and to then discuss the themes in the Movie. What I did not anticipate was how I was going to feel watching it.

My biggest fear as a parent is that one of my children would be a Bully. No parent wants that or for their own child to be on the receiving end. When I was 11 in year 6 at primary school, I was at a sleep over at what I thought were my friends house for a birthday party. I can’t write down what these grils did to me here as that is too confrontational but least to say my heart sunk that someone could be so mean and violting to someone else at such a young age. I did not tell anyone because I was scared of what they would do to me and I was embarassed to be on the receiving end. It was such a blow to my confidence. I wanted to ask the parent to call my mum and go home but I did not want to make a scene or act that it had offended me. To this day I still wonder what in the world could posess someone to be so mean to another. Why me?

As I sat in the movie theatre watching this Movie, it really highlighted for me that there needs to more more awareness of bullying. Parents need to step up, schools need to be consistent and not wash it over because it is not ok. As for workplaces, like a family behaviour is learnt from that which is modelled to them. The behaviour of those in management or seniour roles will be reflected through the whole organisation.

For many years I was fearful of these girls. I went to high school and did not continue schooling with many of these girls and for years struggled with being accepted and being good enough. But now I know that what they did was more about them than me. I hope they have found happiness.

Random Act of Kindness day was mentioned on my morning run last week. This is promoted at different times in different countries and I can’t help but notice the similarity in the letters to RUOK? What if we were all kind every day, would we even need the RUOK day? Life is hard and not everyone can be a captain of a team or win a prize and life should not be about that. Life is about meaningful relationships and connection.

Choose your words wisely. A saying I share with my children often is ‘quick to think and slow to anger’. Most arguements and disagreements I believe are often the result of poor communication and assumptions. If you have not heard the saying don’t assume- you will make as ass out of you and me, remind yourself of this one.

We are all good enough. Christmas is often a time of reflection and this year I have done a lot of reflecting before hand. Life is a journey, love your family and learn to listen because that truly is the way to better communication.

Choose Kindness and have a Merry Christmas

Home Made Lip Balms

A hand bag essential, lip balms keep your lip soft. A little while ago I checked out the ingredients in a store bought version and here is what I found

  • Oxybenzone- derived from petroleum is a UV absorber, associated with endocrine disruption, produces damaging reactive oxygen species upon exposure to sunlight
  • Mentyl Anthranilate- synthetic UV absorber not assessed for safety in cosmetics. produces damaging reative oxygen species upone exposure to sunlight
  • Fragrance- synthetic scent which contains phthalates
  • parabens- synthetic preservatives- suspected endocrine disruption, contact dermatitis and skin irritation in some people

(source: Info from the Chemical maze App)

I am not happy about any of these ingredients going on my lips or my families for that matter. Here is the good news. It is really easy to make your own and the recipes are good enough to eat. Chances are you will already have some of these ingredients in your pantry. Here are a couple of recipes and places I have sourced my ingredients from. These recipes are great for nourishing your lips and are quick to make.

Foaming Hand Soap

I make my own foaming hand soap and it is really easy ! Simply buy a bottle to re-use over and over again or re-purpose on old foaming pump bottle.  In my low tox journey I have been looking at ingredients and trying to avoid

  • skin irritants- think SLS
  • endocrine disruptors-triclosan- an anti-bacterial agent ( banned in the US but not in Australia for personal use), synthetic fragrance i.e phthalates, parfum
  • cheap preservatives- parabens, also a known endocrine disruptor which have other health concerns too.

With just a few ingredients you can make your own

Foaming Hand Soap
Here is what you will need

  • Dr Bronne’s Castille Soap- I buy mine at Nourished life
  • Water
  • Essential Oils of Choice- I like Thieves or Purification, from Young Living
  • Olive or Almond oil
  • Foaming hand soap container: try here,  or here (pictured)

Fill soap pump 1/4 full with Castille Soap.

Add 1 tsp Olive or v6 (this is optional but provides great moisturing). Next add essential oils- for 250mls I use 10-15 drops. Swirl to combine.

Top with water leaving enough room at the top to attach the pump. If you like a thick lather increase the amount of castille soap.

This is seriously easy, will take you less than 5 minutes and you can even teach your kids to do it and better still they won’t be using toxins on their skin!

If DIY is not your thing, Thieves Foaming hand soap is ready to go smells delicious and will nourish your hands without the toxins. It can be purchased from Young Living as part of the Healthy Home Premium Starter Kit here

Inspiring teens to make Better Choices

Last weekend I had the privilege of sharing with a group of teenagers how to make some essential oil Rollers/ real perfume and some infused Bath salts. I know that teenage girls love the beautiful scents that come in body products, I was one once. The aromas can make you feel good and boost your mood, thank you our amazing olfactory system!!

As a medical household we receive the Australian Medical Association magazine VicDoc. I was reading it the other day (October/November 2017) and came across an article ‘Endocrine disrupting chemicals and fertility’ I was so excited to find this! Now you might be thinking I don’t plan on having kids for awhile or I am done with kids or maybe you never plan to have them at all BUT these EDC’s can interfere with the body’s normal functioning in both men and women. This effects everyone! Finally this was being published in a medical magazine.

In regards to fertility EDC’s can have negative affects by mimicking and/or blocking oestrogen and testosterone. This can cause changes in hormone levels, decreased sperm and egg quality and damage to sperm DNA, increase risk of miscarriage and early menopause.

It is becoming more and more evident that Endocrine Dusrupting Chemicals (EDC’s) are damaging our bodies and can also accumulate and be passed onto the next generation. As there are many  EDC’s in every day products sometimes it is helpful to be armed with some info to help you sort though your cupboard and replace with better choices.

EDC’s can be found everywhere and it is hard to eliminate them but you can REDUCE your exposure. They can be found in air, soil, water and man-made products. Here are some EDC’s

  • Bisphenols (BPA/BPS/BPF)
  • Phthalates
  • Parabens
  • Pesticides, herbices amd insecticides
  • Heavy metals

Ok so you might look at that list and go where do I start. If you can choose organic food and/or produce from spray free farms. Phthalates make plastic flexible (opt for glass or stainless steel containers and drink bottles if possible) and amoung other things are found in synthetic fragrance. In synthetic fragrance, phthalates act as a solvent to make the scent last. As reported in the Syndey Morning Herald, there are increasing concerns on the use of synthetic fragrance due to the fact that it is a self regulated industry and you don’t actually know what is in it! Parabens are used as a preservative in personal care products, anti-bacterial products and cosmetics.

Essential Oils are pure plants ectracts which can be used in personal care products without the need for synthetics. They will lift your mood, promote relaxation and a quiet mind and lots of other great feelings. They smell great and your teens will LOVE them. Here are a few recipes that I know you will love and can use with your teenagers. A little bit of Essential oil goes a long way. Young Living oils are super concentrated and you don’t need much. If you don’t have Essential Oils yet, you are truly missing out!

Infused Bath Salts

Super easy. Mix  1 cup Epsom and 1 cup Himalayan salts with 1 cup bi- carb soda. Add 10 drops Stress-Away essential oils. Mix well. Store in a glass jar. Run a bath and soak. Great way to relax, wind down, increase your absorption of minerals (84 in the Himalayan salts) and magnesium.

Focus Roller

Rather than using s stimulant that can have negative affects on your body try this recipe. In a 10ml Roller, add 2 drops of Lemon, 2 drops Rosemary and 2 drops Lemon and top with fractionated coconut oil or Young Living v6 As I explained to the girls this is your study buddy or your homework helper. Apply to pulse points

Calm Roller

In a 10ml Roller bottle add 3 drops Lavender and 3 drops of Orange and top with fractionated coconut oil or v6. This is a great way to inspire feelings of calm and bright and smell great at the same time. Apply to pulse points

Lastly I can not forget to mention make-up! This is one thing that women have used for centuries to enhance their natural features, which is exactly what I believe make-up should be. When your daughter has her ballet performance, debutante ball or just wants to cover a few blemishes and enhance her appearance choose Savvy Minerals. Free from harmful ingredients, it won’t clog your pores and there are no endocrine disrupting synthetic fragrances. Savvy Minerals is exactly that a mineral based make-up range using mineral pigments. Stunning colours, beautiful brushes and lipsticks and lip glosses to die for! Read about savvy Minerals here

Homemade Granola

For some time I have been experimenting with making my own granola. Since ditching cereal out of a box, I wanted an alternative breakfast cereal that tasted delicious and was whole food based.

Making your own is easier than you think

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Oats (quinoa flakes for gluten free)
  • 1 cup Almonds chopped
  • 1/2 cup Pumpkin seeds
  • 1/2 cup Sunflower seeds
  • 1 cup Cashews or any other nut of choice chopped
  • 2 cups Flaked coconut
  • 1 cup Currents
  • 1 cup Ningxia Wolfberries
  • 1/4- 1/3 cup Coconut oil (melted)
  • 1-2 drops Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil

Wholefood Collective has bulk wholefoods at great prices! (aff link)

Method

In a bowl combine oats, coconut, nuts, seeds.

Drizzle dry ingredients with coconut oil and roast on trays for 60mins at 120 degrees. A long slow roast will produce lovely crispy granola.

Once done return granola in mixing bowl add cinnamon bark essential oil and dried fruit. Mix well. Cool and store in glass jars.

For a plain granola omit the coconut oil and add dried fruit and you are done!

Store in Glass jars in the pantry and enjoy with your preferred milk and yoghurt.

This is a large batch and lasts our family of 5 at least a week. The great thing is that you can adjust the ingredients to your liking. Pecans and 1/2 tsp vanilla powder make a great addition too. It would however make a lovely gift!

Note

Ningxia Wolfberries (Lycium barbarum)

The wolfberries sourced for NingXia Red hail from the Ningxia province in Northern China. This superfruit has one of the highest percentages of fiber of any whole food and contains zeaxanthin—a carotenoid important to maintaining healthy vision. It also contains polysaccharides, amino acids, and symbiotic vitamin mineral pairs that when present together promote optimum internal absorption.1

There are a number of studies 2, 3 demonstrating the positive effects of the Ningxia wolfberry. Delaying optic nerve degeneration and reducing ischaemic brain injury by maintaining mitochondrial balance both confirm the long standing thought of the people from the Ninxia province in China for supporting our health

Young Living also produce a Ningxia infused drink Ningxia red, that is not only delicious but a easy method for the whole family to enjoy. A 60ml daily dose for adults and 30ml for children to provide an array of health promoting anti-oxidants.

Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil

Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil a registered culinary oil. It is important you only use a very small amount as it is strong. 1-2drops are plenty. It has a delicous flavour and aroma when added to dishes. It should always be added at the end of cooking. For more great ideas using Essential oils in your cooking visit Young Living blog for a fabulous apple cinnamon chip recipe and Flavour of Joy website and follow Chef kate McAloon use these delicous oils in her recipes.

Is your cleaning causing more harm than good?

How many times have you started coughing when cleaning the bathroom or simply opening the laundry detergent? Does walking down the cleaning aisle of the supermarket smell really strong to you and cause you discomfort? Well when you discover what is in these products it can be a little alarming.

I recently had a chat with Alison Palmer form Health Connection Ballarat, you can listen to the podcast here

In Australia ingredients in cleaning products do not have to be listed on the label. You can ask for a material data safety sheet, which you may be able to find online, but even then it will only include what the toxic ones are according to the Therapeutic Good Administration (TGA). (source) You don’t have to look too far to see ‘ warning’, and ‘poison’ signs on the back of many products sold on the supermarket shelves in Australia.

Kidasfe Victoria report that the major cause of injury and hospital admission is unintentional poisoning, including cleaning products, bleach, cosmetics and more (source)

Ingredients in cleaning and also some personal care products that are potentially damaging to your health include

Sodium Hypochlorite otherwise known as bleach can cause iritation in the eyes, mouth, lungs and skin. Bleach is also very reactive with ammonia and other acids. Bleach is used in many bathroom cleaners that comes with some serious health effects. A study looking at the exposure of school age children demonstrated that passive exposure of bleach cleaning can increase the risk of respiratory and other infections. (source)

Triclosan (in anti-bacterial soaps, detergents and toothpaste) is an anti-bacterial that has now been banned in the US for domestic use. Triclosan accumulates in fat and can build up over time and has suggested that is can disrupt the thyroid hormones. (source) Triclosan  has been reported to decrease oocyte  and embryo quality source, making it a damaging agent to reproductive health.

The Florence statement is a consensus of 200 scientists and medical professionals who have concluded based one extensive research that Triclosan and triclocarban are environmentally persistent endocrine disruptors that biaccumulate and are toxic to aquatic and other organisms. source THe FDA in America has stated that anti-bacterial soaps are no more effective than using plain soap and water (source)

Phthalates A widely used group of chemicals that can interfere with hormones in the body, posing risks to reproductive and thyroid systems. Not only are these a contaminant in humans but are also widespread in the environment and wildlife as well ( source )

Phthalates are most commonly found in cosmetics and body care products. The most common use is as an ingredient in ‘fragrance’ The Phthalate acts as a solvent to synthetic fragrances allowing them to bind together and last for a long time. Many cleaners and most importantly laundry detergents and fabric softeners will have fragrance included in them. Don’t really fancy having that around my kids!

Sodium Hydroxide– a corrosive alkali- found in oven cleaners. It can irritate the skin, cause  respiratory problems and has concerns for vision (source)

Butoxyethanol (2-BE) used in cleaning products and surface cleaners, floor strippers, window cleaners, spot cleaners. Is a scheduled poison! Exposure by inhalation, swallowing or direct contact can cause, headaches, irritation to the eyes and nose, nausea and triedness (source)

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate– a widely used inexpensive foaming substance in body wash, hand soap, toothpastes and soaps. May cause skin irritations. It has been recommended by the international journal of toxicology that concentration levels of no more than 1% in products with prolonged use, however cleaning products can have sls levels of between 10-20% (source)

Cleaning your home naturally can be a lot simpler and easier than buying multpile cleaning products from the supermarket. It just requires a new approach,  learning about what to use and when.

Bi-carb soda: a readily available powder that is useful in making scrubs, cleaners that need a little bit of extra scrubbing action

Vinegar- has high acidity allowing it to loosen mineral depposits and dissolve soap scum. great also for removing excess soap off washing when used in your rinse section of your washing machine. It is also great for softening the water too ( ditch the fabric softener!)

Essential Oils- add a  natural scent and allow you to clean naturally. My top picks are lemon ( refreshing), Tea tree, Thieves and Purification (odour eliminator) and Eucalyptus. Make you own air freshener using water, essential oils and a dash of witch hazel. Better still, you can use a cold water diffuser with essential oils to not only frangrance your home but purify the air too.

Castille Soap- I love Dr bronner’s and is the main base for my foaming hand soap that I use in my bathrooms.

Lemons- have a lemon tree? use a half cut lemon and some bi-carb to clean your sink or glass in your shower. Add half a lemon to your dishwasher for extra cleaning. Add 1/2- 1 cup of lemon juice to a load of washing for whiter whites.

Salt-I use this in my homemade washing powder. Great for removing stains

Thieves Household Cleaner– This is a plant concentrate that I literally use for my whole home. It is made of plant based ingredients and that is it. No synthetics, no fillers and it really does work. As it is a concentrate is is super cheap to use and cheaper than any other cleaner you will buy in the supermarket. Your bathroom will love it and so will your skin! Did I mention that is is safe for your children to use too? You can read more about how I use this cleaner here.

Overhauling your laundry products may be one of the best ways to reduce exposure to synthetic fragrances and other synthetic ingredients  (which are really hard to find out what they are as they are often not listed). Have a think about it, every time you wash clothes are potentially being exposed to synthetic ingredients and fragrances- especially if you use fabric softeners. Those clothes are then worn on your body all day.  You sleep for long periods of time in the sheets laundered in the washing powder too. You can try my recipe for home made here, or you can speak to me about using Thieves Laundry soap which I now use as it is excellent and lasts a really long time and let’s face it, I don’t always have time to make it!

Changes I have noticed since removing some of these toxic products

  1. No more worry about having unsafe things in my home!
  2. No coughing when I clean the bathrooms- infact the scent now smells invigorating. Essential oils will do that for you.
  3. Reduction in dry flaky skin
  4. No more bleeding gums- I now use a sls free toothpaste

There is so much more I could write about but that might be enough information for you to think about and make a few changes. Your awareness is the only thing in between you and the products you use.

Young Living Healthy Home Premium Starter kit might be just the thing you need to get started and ditch the toxic cleaners for good. Get started straight away, you won’t regret it. Young Living products come with a money back guarantee so you have nothing to lose. please chat to me for more details.

Enhancing Memory and Learning

Memory and learning, something we do for our entire lives. The older I get the more I realise there is to learn rather than the schedules of learning required of students studying at school or university.

Learning is our ability to get and process new information and memory is our ability to store it for future purposes. Every day we are required to use these aspects of our brain function. As a mother of 3 kids, creating an environment that helps not only myself be efficient and productive, but also for my family, is something that I feel a sense of responsibility for.

book-1845356_1920

The sense of smell is not always considered in a learning environment however is also powerful. The use of aromas produce similar effects to music in the learning environment. Both can energise, set or change a mood, relax, reinforce memory and make the surroundings more pleasant and welcoming.1

Lemon*, Peppermint* and Rosemary Essential oils have been studied for their effectiveness in supporting our memory and learning.

Lemon essential oil has a clean crisp scent. It scent promotes clarity and is invigorating and enhancing. Lemon has been shown to have an anti-stress effect and can improve cognitive function. 2,3

Peppermint has been found to enhance memory and increase alertness. 4

Rosemary essential oil has produced a significant enhancement of performance for overall quality of memory and resulted in an increase in perceived contentedness. 5, 6

These three essential oils are a great tool to use in the classroom, office, home to stimulate a productive environment. Did I mention thay they actually smell great too?

Now you know which oils you can use, let’s help you work out how to use them.

Diffuse

2-3 drops each of Lemon, Peppermint and Rosemary. In any area of the home/office or workplace.

Roller Bottle

Using a 10ml Roller bottle (or re-use your old essential oil bottle with Aroma Glide attachment and adjust depending on bottle size) is a great way to have your essential oils on hand to use during the day. When using the roller bottle apply as needed to pulse points- inside wrists, back or side of neck.

For 6-15yrs use 1-2 drops each of Lemon, Peppermint and Rosemary and top with a carrier oil (any vegetable oil like Young Living v6 or grapeseed)

For 15+ years, add 4-5 drops each of Lemon, Peppermint and Rosemary topped with carrier oil

Another option would be to make your own personal inhaler! Buy blank ones from ebay.

* Essential Oils in the Young Living Premium Starter Kit

Which oils help you focus?  Peppermint is my favourite.
