Enhancing Memory and Learning

Memory and learning, something we do for our entire lives. The older I get the more I realise there is to learn rather than the schedules of learning required of students studying at school or university.

Learning is our ability to get and process new information and memory is our ability to store it for future purposes. Every day we are required to use these aspects of our brain function. As a mother of 3 kids, creating an environment that helps not only myself be efficient and productive, but also for my family, is something that I feel a sense of responsibility for.

book-1845356_1920

The sense of smell is not always considered in a learning environment however is also powerful. The use of aromas produce similar effects to music in the learning environment. Both can energise, set or change a mood, relax, reinforce memory and make the surroundings more pleasant and welcoming.1

Lemon*, Peppermint* and Rosemary Essential oils have been studied for their effectiveness in supporting our memory and learning.

Lemon essential oil has a clean crisp scent. It scent promotes clarity and is invigorating and enhancing. Lemon has been shown to have an anti-stress effect and can improve cognitive function. 2,3

Peppermint has been found to enhance memory and increase alertness. 4

Rosemary essential oil has produced a significant enhancement of performance for overall quality of memory and resulted in an increase in perceived contentedness. 5, 6

These three essential oils are a great tool to use in the classroom, office, home to stimulate a productive environment. Did I mention thay they actually smell great too?

Now you know which oils you can use, let’s help you work out how to use them.

Diffuse

2-3 drops each of Lemon, Peppermint and Rosemary. In any area of the home/office or workplace.

Roller Bottle

Using a 10ml Roller bottle (or re-use your old essential oil bottle with Aroma Glide attachment and adjust depending on bottle size) is a great way to have your essential oils on hand to use during the day. When using the roller bottle apply as needed to pulse points- inside wrists, back or side of neck.

For 6-15yrs use 1-2 drops each of Lemon, Peppermint and Rosemary and top with a carrier oil (any vegetable oil like Young Living v6 or grapeseed)

For 15+ years, add 4-5 drops each of Lemon, Peppermint and Rosemary topped with carrier oil

Another option would be to make your own personal inhaler! Buy blank ones from ebay.

Which oils help you focus?  Peppermint is my favourite.

Healthy Homes

Do you want a healthy home without any nasty chemicals?A couple of years ago I was concerned what I was being exposed to and also what I was exposing my family to. I had noticed that so many people seem to be unwell, people around me were receiving an awful diagnosis.

I decided that I needed to educate myself on what I had been using in my home and personally too. What I use in my home was one thing I could control. Very quickly I started learning about the presence of synthetic cleaning chemicals and artificial substances in products that we use every day. If you want to do some research here which I highly recommend, the visit EWG to check out ingredients. This requires a bit of work. Anything above a 3, is worth steering clear of or minimising. The Chemical Maze book and App are also great. Thankfully I found these amazing products from Young Living. Their committment to purity was a clincher for me. Mother’s Day is just around the corner..

For me living in Australia, Mother’s day is in a couple of weeks. I am not a big gifts person but when I do buy gifts I  think long and hard about what I am buying. I try to support small business and I also like to know what I am buying. After looking into toxins in my home and removing as many as possible, I like to gift things that I would be prepared to have in my home.  After all I don’t want to gift anything that will have a negative impact on the health of my friends and family members! Synthetic fragrances for me are a big no no. Along with the fact that I react to them quite badly, they are not good for our health. For years fragrances have been heavily marketed as the perfect gift, along with scented candles, body products.

The average woman applies between 9-15 products daily and can include over 100 chemicals. Unfortunately in Australia and the US many chemicals are used in personal products with out being tested, unlike the EU! Thankfully there are many companies doing great things with removing toxins from everyday products. You will find that these products are more expensive and that is because they have higher quality standards and don’t use mass produced synthetic products. Having said that I think I would prefer producst that were of high quality that are not full of toxins, wouldn’t you?

If you want to educate yourself consider buying the Chemical Maze Book  or download their app (aff) for your phone. This app has been a great educational tool I have used to educate my kids about what is in packaged food and for me  personal care products we use at our home. Unfortunatley labels can be misleading and the word Natural does not always mean that it is natural. It may include some natural ingredients. After reading a report by the EWG that painted a not so nice picture about what is actually in perfumes, I tossed all mine out. It felt criminal thinking how expensive they were but once I realised that they were full of synthetic chemicals they had to go. It pays to educate yourself. Ok enough of that

There are a few companies that I trust and buy from.   I use Young Living essential oils as my perfume now. Pure plant based essential oils, that smell amazing. Everyone deserves that. Aside from perfume, essential oils have many other benefits too. Think emotional support, toxin free cleaning solutions, natural fragrance for your home. There are many. Why not gift a Premium Starter kit?  Order yours here, once you have an account set up you can order in the future if you wish. However once you experience them I know you will LOVE them. Young Living is a global company, you don’t have to be in Australia to order! if you want more info read my essential Oils page here  let me know if you do as I would love to help show you how to use them.

If you have essential oils consider making a super simple gift or maybe an excellent treat for yourself.

Lavender Bath Salts

Lavender has been used relaxation and it also a great Essential Oil to use to help overcome feelings of anxiousness. Magnesium salts are a perfect addition to your bath as magnesium is an essential mineral required by every organ is your body. As our skin is our largest organ, it is readily absorbed in a bath and has numerous benefits. I certainly have a much better nights sleep after a magnesium bath. Use 1/4 -1/2cup per bath.

Add ingredients to a jar and shake to disperse the essential oil. It really is that simple

Most of all this Mother’s day take some time out for yourself whether you are a mother or not.  If you do buy a gift, make sure it a gift that is good for your health. I know that these are not the only choices out there but they are ones I can vouch for. I love that people are being more aware and are voting with their dollar.

Kids Toothpaste, let’s take a look

Ingredients in mainstream toothpaste are not necessarily good for you. I rarely go down the aisle of the supermarket with toothpaste but today I did to get some idea of what is in children’s toothpaste. The reason I have selected the following toothpaste is this is one I used to purchase

Here are the ingredients I took from the back of the packet and some research I have done on what the ingredients actually are

This toothpaste was recommended for 2-6 year olds

sorbitol ( maybe GM, not assessed for safety in cosmetics)

water

Hydrated silica ( safe for most people)

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (maybe derived from petroleum. can penetrate skin and accumulate in vital organs. May be associated with skin ailments, eczema, dermatitis, itching, hives, rash)

Peg-12 ( derived from petroleum, caution advised.)

cellulose Gum ( safe up to 20%)

tetrasodium pyrophosphate ( safe for most people)

sodium saccharin (artificial sweetener petroleum derived, best avoided)

Sodium Fluoride ( maybe manufactured by reacting hydrofluoric acid with sodium carbonate. Potentially hazardous to health)

Mica Dioxide

Titanium Dioxide ( produces white colour, prohibited in food for infants)

FD &C Blue no 1 (synthetic colour)

D & C yellow No. 10 ( also known as quinoline yellow, a synthetic dry produced from coal or tar sources. Used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, but do you really want to put it in your mouth?)

Thankfully slowly there is more information about the benefits of incorporating essential oils into oral care. This article written by dental hygienists in Indiana is a step in the right direction with getting the information out into mainstream.

Kidsects Slique Toothpaste is a fluoride free toothpaste from young Living without the use of fluoride, dyes, synthetic colours, artificial flavours, or preservatives. It has a base of coconut oil, calcium carbonate and baking soda for gentle and effective cleaning. In addition it contains essential oils that promote healthy teeth.

It is possible to care for your teeth without harsh chemicals. Young Living have a range of toothpaste for the whole family. I love the aromabright range which convenitently comes in a 5 pack. The dentarome toothpastes are also great. Dentarome Ultra comes in the Thieves Premium starter kit ($259). If you are keen to overhaul your cleaning and dental routine this is the starter kit for you! You can become a memeber here and receive 24% off future purchases. Interested in trying one or two items? Send me a message and I will work be in touch

The toothpastes can even double as a deoderant. What!! absolutely, have a look at the ingredients in a natural deoderant and you will find that sodium bicarbonate and coconut oil (2 of the main ingredients in Young Living toothpastes ) are two of the main ingredients.

At the end of the day, we are all responsible for our own choices. My choice is to use a toothpaste that is free of synthetic ingredients, What is yours??

Supporting Restful Sleep in Kids

Recently I was asked about essential oils to help support sleep in Children. Without restful or enough sleep we do not function at our best. With Children, lack of sleep can manifest by an increase in tantrums, reduced concentration.  I have trouble winding down and getting to sleep and I am sure that some children are the same. There are a number of things we can do to help our bodies sleep well. Here are some things I do to help get a good nights sleep for my kids and myself

  1. Reducing screen time before bed. Artificial Blue light can be damaging to our natural circadian rhythm
  2. Go to bed at a similar time each night. Children(6-13) on average need 9-11hrs. It can be different for everyone so listen to sleep ques.
  3. Relax in a Magnesium bath. I add 1-2 tablespoons af Magnesium salts with 1-2 drops Lavender Essential Oil to my kids bath. The essentail oils can be mixed with a tsp of jojoba or coconut oil which will leave skin feeling moisturised. There are numerous benefits of Magnesium and sleep is just one of them. Magnesium is also best absorbed through the skin. Lavender Essential Oil has a calming scent and is also excellent for calming nervous tension and anxiety
  4. Foot massage. My kids love a foot massage and find it extremely relaxing. While sometimes it is a love hate relationship with giving the foot massage, I have extremely fond memories of one of friends mum’s doing this for me as a teenager and remembering how relaxing it was. Have a think about how long you are on your feet for each day? Young childrenen  may find that massage helps them to relax and encourages a restful sleep. I will often massage a drop of Lavender Essential oil with a tsp of vegetable oil into their feet at bed time. Read more about and how to massage your kids feet here Applying essential oils to the feet is an excellent option as our skin on the soles is the least sensitive. Always follow instructions on the bottle and test patch first.
  5. Diffusing Essential Oils. Using a ultrasonic diffuser with a few (2-3) drops of essential oil can encourage a restful sleep. I use a small number of drops as I find that is all you need in a bedroom. Lavender is extremely relaxing. Orange Essential oil encourages feelings of happiness. Peace and Calming  encourages deep relaxation and Gentle baby promotes a calm atmosphere for Mother and baby and in my experience everyone! Gentle baby would have one fo my all time favourites to create a calm environment.

For FAQ’s about dilution and safety of essential oils read here

To down load a chart by Robert Tisserand outlinging appropiate dilutions please click here

untitled

Topical dilution guidlines are as follows
0.5% for 2-6yrs old
1% for 6-12
2% 12 +
3% occasional use such as perfume
I don’t use concentrations higher than this as I don’t find it necessary at all.
For topical application for a 8yr old you could add 3 drops of Lavender to a 10ml roller bottle and top up with a carrier oil. All ready to roll on the feet for a night time massage!
Enjoy and have a  restful sleep

Grocery Shopping- what to buy and where to get it

I have radically overhauled how I shop compared to a few years ago. One of the ‘big 2’ supermarkets in Australia used to get all of my business and now I nolonger put all my eggs in one basket! Having said that, there have been times when I simply did not have the time or energy to shop around.

After attending a speaking event by Libby Weaver in Melborne last year and reading her book “Exhausted to Energised” I really believe we need to get back to basics, teach our kids to cook, grow at least some veggies (even if it herbs) and eat simple food that does not come from a box.

After watching and reading about the study on a family eating organic produce in Sweden, I was amazed to see the traces of pesticides in their body diminish after only 2 weeks. I now place more of an emphasis of buying organic where I can.

Stocking a wholefoods pantry can be a challenge. Read this guide from Well Nourished to help  set yourself up.

I source a mix of things locally and online. As I live in Ballarat some of the recommendation are for places I can support locally.

Fruit and Veggies

I always try to buy fresh.

The Food Garden in Castlemaine Victoria deliver fruit and veggie boxes to Ballarat  on a Friday along with many other things. Their produce is always good quality and I love the convenience of it being delivered to my door. Graham is always a pleasure to deal with and their boxes ARE affordable. Just rememeber all fruit and veg is better than no fruit and veg but organic is better. They also sell pantry items that are carefully packaged in paper reducing the unnecessary plastic packaging.

Aussie Farmers direct also deliver organic fruit and veg.

Spring Creek Organics are at markets in Ballarat and melbourne. They also have a farm shop which works on an honesty system.

Organic Angels deliver to Ballarat on a Tuesday. I have not used them yet but their prices look good  and they have a range of other things you might find useful for your pantry too

Buninyong Blueberry farm have spray free blueberries for picking and farm gate sales every January. Fun day out for the family. Check out their website.

Meat

Brooklands free Range farm at Blampied have just delicious meat and bacon free of nitrates too. They are at many farmers markets. I have been known to drive out to their property and fill up my freezer. Jono and Nat are lovely

Millbrook Free Range I recently ordered half a pig! yep I filled my mum’s freezer and mine with different pork cuts that are absolutley delicious. Everyone in the family has been raving how delicious it is.

Salt Kitchen smalls good and Charcuterie. Beautiful ham and lots of other hand made goods that can be ourchased locally at Wilson’s Fruit and Veg, and other stores across victoria. Preservative free sausages are always a bif hit especially the wagyu and rosemary. They also do Christmas hams! Check out a stockist near you.

Simply Free Range offer home delivery. I have had a friend who uses them and recommends them.

Braelands Grass fed beef and lamb from Myrniong deliver to Ballarat

Pantry Goods

Feeding a family can be quite a challenge these days and a well stocked pantry makes the world of difference. There are many things I buy in bulk, like nuts, coconut, oats, rice, cacao, lentils, organic dried fruit.

The wholefood Collective* is a bulk wholefoods shopping site with flat rate postage Australia wide. I find their prices are great and delivery is quick.

The Source wholefoods I wish we had one of these locally!

Of the 2 Big supermarkets, I prefer woolworths that has a better selection of wholefoods.

However I absolutely LOVE our local IGA supermarkets in Ballarat. A great selection. Local sourdough bread from basilio, Free range pastured eggs from Millbrook, Inglenook dairy milk and so much more!

Bathroom

Now you might think it odd that I have added this category but I have learnt to consider everything I buy and try to continaully make the best choice when things run out.

Who Gives a Crap sell, toilet paper free made of recycled paper or sustainable bamboo. They also sell tissues and kitchen towel. They donate half their profits to overseas water aid which I also think is great. To receive $10 off you first order click here There are no synthetic fragrances on their products either which I think is important. Perfect for home or Office. Interesting talking point too!

Cleaning. I love Thieves Household cleaner. Plant based, biodegradeable, septic safe. If something smells chemically it usually is. One of the best things you can do for you and your family is the go low tox on your cleaning! I have written about it before and you can read about that here

Washing Dishes

For my dishwasher and washing up I currently use Ecostore.  A low tox option that works. Sometimes knowing what to buy is really hard. I recently listened to a podcast  by Alexx Stuart- Low Tox Life, who interviewed the founder of Ecostore products which I have found readily available in supermarkets in Ballarat and are available Australia wide.

Linen

Bhumi organic cotton store makes certified organic, fair trade sheets, towels, underwear, yoga and active wear. Click here for $20 off your first order

Sheets on the Line have stores in Brisbane, Melbourne and retail online. They often have some great sales and I have picked up some excellent quality organic King Single sheets sets for my kids here.

Buying in bulk will definitely save you money. It does require some foreward planning and organisation. Everyone time your purchase you vote with your dollar! Support the

An article recently published in the Good Weekend talks about the dangers of synthetic fragrance and it part of a book written by Kate Grenville- The case against fragrance. Read it here She speaks about the headaches she has suffered that after removing artificial frangrance have gone away. In my experience removing artifical fragrance has certainly been positive for my skin too. The Laundry aisle in the supermarket is a challenge for me to walk through down now!  Time to make some Laundry powder again.

Hope you like these combinations, let me know how you go

Emotions and Essential Oils

I love that Essential Oils can have an effect on your emotions. This was something that I knew nothing about but was pleasantly suprised when I started using them. After implementing them in my cleaning and using my diffuser, I started to realise how good they can make you feel. 1 drop of Lavender can relax the body and mind! When you inhale an Essential oil they interact with your limbic system in your brain. The great thing about this is different Essential oils can be used for relaxing, stimulating, energising, grounding. As essential oils affect people differently you may not get the same response that someone else does. Use this as a guide to find the Essential Oils that work for you. This is definitley not a finite list but one to help you get started. To experience Essential oils you can inhale them directly from the bottle, apply topically with some carrier oil or my favourite is to put them in a diffuser

essential-oils-and-the-brain

Calming/Anxiety

Lavender*, Frankincense*, Bergamot, Chamomile, Ylang Ylang, Vetiver, Rose

Energising

Lemon*, Orange, Rosemary, Peppermint*

Focus

Rosemary, Mandarin, Grapefruit, Basil, Black pepper, Lemon*, Peppermint*

Happiness

Frankincense*,Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lemon*, Orange, Sandalwood

Dffusing essential oils is in my opinion the best way to experience them. I love diffusing lavendar and cedarwood or Frankincense at night time before sleep. Anything citrus with some mint in the mornings to encourage everyone to get up and go when we are feeling a bit lethargic. Orange is a firm favourite of one of my boys when combined with Lavender.

When applying essential oils  topically, always dilute and less is always best. Please always follow a safety guideline when applying topically. As a general rule 2% for adults and 1% for children over 2

I would love to hear if you have had a positive experience with Essential Oils.

*Denotes essential oils in the Premium Starter kit. If you want to purchase click here to go to my Essential Oils page

Favourite Food Blogs

The internet is great for inspiration in the kitchen. I am trying my best to feed our family a diet that is nourishing. I always tell my kids that you need to fuel it well so that it can perform and do the things you want it to do. Feeding it junk will make you feel like well, junk. It does not always happen but I make veggies a priority and try and teach the kids to listen to how they feel. If you feel sick after eating something, it’s not for you. Simple as that.

I have a few go to blogs for recipes that I thought I would share.

Well Nourished is a blog by Georgia  that makes cooking simple and has many variations to her recipes depending on intolerances or allergies. We love her banana bread and recipe ‘Meat free Monday’ (aka lentils) if you need dinner on the table in 20 mins. I have both her e-books and use them both. Fabulous

Thermobexta is full of wonderful recipes thay I make in my thermomix and has my go- to recipe for Tomato Ketchup. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

The Healthy Chef Teresa Cutter writes for the Sunday life Magazine. I love her granola recipe and always make a batch each week based on her web recipe. I like how her recipes are categorised into breakfast, lunch, dinner etc when you are looking for inspiration for a particular meal or want to try something a bit different

Skinny Mixers has such a great range of free recipes (thermomix based) for Asian, Mexican, Indian food. Perfect if you like to cook food with flavour! The satay is a must.

Quirky cooking   Love Jo’s range of recipes. We absolutely love her mayonaise and is definitely our go to for that

I am always keen to learn new recipes so if there is another blog that you would like to share, please share it!
