Home Made Lip Balms

A hand bag essential, lip balms keep your lip soft. A little while ago I checked out the ingredients in a store bought version and here is what I found

  • Oxybenzone- derived from petroleum is a UV absorber, associated with endocrine disruption, produces damaging reactive oxygen species upon exposure to sunlight
  • Mentyl Anthranilate- synthetic UV absorber not assessed for safety in cosmetics. produces damaging reative oxygen species upone exposure to sunlight
  • Fragrance- synthetic scent which contains phthalates
  • parabens- synthetic preservatives- suspected endocrine disruption, contact dermatitis and skin irritation in some people

(source: Info from the Chemical maze App)

I am not happy about any of these ingredients going on my lips or my families for that matter. Here is the good news. It is really easy to make your own and the recipes are good enough to eat. Chances are you will already have some of these ingredients in your pantry. Here are a couple of recipes and places I have sourced my ingredients from. These recipes are great for nourishing your lips and are quick to make.

  • 15 g beeswax
  • 15g Shea Butter
  • 15g Cacao Butter
  • 15g Coconut Oil
  • 1 tsp cacao Powder ( or more)
  • 18 drops Peppermint Essential Oil

Melt beeswax, coconut oil and butters in a glass pyrex dish over a pot of simmering water. Once melted, remove from heat and stir through Cacao Powder and Peppermint Essential oil. Use syringe to fill lip tubes and set in the fridge.

Lavender Lip balms ( approx 18 tubes)

  • 20g avocado Oil
  • 20g Beeswax
  • 15 drops lavender oil

Melt beeswax, butter and oil together in pyrex dish. Remove from heat and stir in lavender Essential oil. Syringe into tubes and set in the fridge

Tips

  • Use a ramekin to stand your lip tubes in

Inspiring teens to make Better Choices

Last weekend I had the privilege of sharing with a group of teenagers how to make some essential oil Rollers/ real perfume and some infused Bath salts. I know that teenage girls love the beautiful scents that come in body products, I was one once. The aromas can make you feel good and boost your mood, thank you our amazing olfactory system!!

As a medical household we receive the Australian Medical Association magazine VicDoc. I was reading it the other day (October/November 2017) and came across an article ‘Endocrine disrupting chemicals and fertility’ I was so excited to find this! Now you might be thinking I don’t plan on having kids for awhile or I am done with kids or maybe you never plan to have them at all BUT these EDC’s can interfere with the body’s normal functioning in both men and women. This effects everyone! Finally this was being published in a medical magazine.

In regards to fertility EDC’s can have negative affects by mimicking and/or blocking oestrogen and testosterone. This can cause changes in hormone levels, decreased sperm and egg quality and damage to sperm DNA, increase risk of miscarriage and early menopause.

It is becoming more and more evident that Endocrine Dusrupting Chemicals (EDC’s) are damaging our bodies and can also accumulate and be passed onto the next generation. As there are many  EDC’s in every day products sometimes it is helpful to be armed with some info to help you sort though your cupboard and replace with better choices.

EDC’s can be found everywhere and it is hard to eliminate them but you can REDUCE your exposure. They can be found in air, soil, water and man-made products. Here are some EDC’s

  • Bisphenols (BPA/BPS/BPF)
  • Phthalates
  • Parabens
  • Pesticides, herbices amd insecticides
  • Heavy metals

Ok so you might look at that list and go where do I start. If you can choose organic food and/or produce from spray free farms. Phthalates make plastic flexible (opt for glass or stainless steel containers and drink bottles if possible) and amoung other things are found in synthetic fragrance. In synthetic fragrance, phthalates act as a solvent to make the scent last. As reported in the Syndey Morning Herald, there are increasing concerns on the use of synthetic fragrance due to the fact that it is a self regulated industry and you don’t actually know what is in it! Parabens are used as a preservative in personal care products, anti-bacterial products and cosmetics.

Essential Oils are pure plants ectracts which can be used in personal care products without the need for synthetics. They will lift your mood, promote relaxation and a quiet mind and lots of other great feelings. They smell great and your teens will LOVE them. Here are a few recipes that I know you will love and can use with your teenagers. A little bit of Essential oil goes a long way. Young Living oils are super concentrated and you don’t need much. If you don’t have Essential Oils yet, you are truly missing out!

Infused Bath Salts

Super easy. Mix  1 cup Epsom and 1 cup Himalayan salts with 1 cup bi- carb soda. Add 10 drops Stress-Away essential oils. Mix well. Store in a glass jar. Run a bath and soak. Great way to relax, wind down, increase your absorption of minerals (84 in the Himalayan salts) and magnesium.

Focus Roller

Rather than using s stimulant that can have negative affects on your body try this recipe. In a 10ml Roller, add 2 drops of Lemon, 2 drops Rosemary and 2 drops Lemon and top with fractionated coconut oil or Young Living v6 As I explained to the girls this is your study buddy or your homework helper. Apply to pulse points

Calm Roller

In a 10ml Roller bottle add 3 drops Lavender and 3 drops of Orange and top with fractionated coconut oil or v6. This is a great way to inspire feelings of calm and bright and smell great at the same time. Apply to pulse points

Lastly I can not forget to mention make-up! This is one thing that women have used for centuries to enhance their natural features, which is exactly what I believe make-up should be. When your daughter has her ballet performance, debutante ball or just wants to cover a few blemishes and enhance her appearance choose Savvy Minerals. Free from harmful ingredients, it won’t clog your pores and there are no endocrine disrupting synthetic fragrances. Savvy Minerals is exactly that a mineral based make-up range using mineral pigments. Stunning colours, beautiful brushes and lipsticks and lip glosses to die for! Read about savvy Minerals here

Healthy Homes

Do you want a healthy home without any nasty chemicals?A couple of years ago I was concerned what I was being exposed to and also what I was exposing my family to. I had noticed that so many people seem to be unwell, people around me were receiving an awful diagnosis.

I decided that I needed to educate myself on what I had been using in my home and personally too. What I use in my home was one thing I could control. Very quickly I started learning about the presence of synthetic cleaning chemicals and artificial substances in products that we use every day. If you want to do some research here which I highly recommend, the visit EWG to check out ingredients. This requires a bit of work. Anything above a 3, is worth steering clear of or minimising. The Chemical Maze book and App are also great. Thankfully I found these amazing products from Young Living. Their committment to purity was a clincher for me. Not only are they all plant based, there labelling is transparent, they source their ingredients sustainably and are committed to improving the health of the planet. Check out seed.to.seal

An article recently published in the Good Weekend talks about the dangers of synthetic fragrance and it part of a book written by Kate Grenville- The case against fragrance. Read it here She speaks about the headaches she has suffered that after removing artificial frangrance have gone away. In my experience removing artifical fragrance has certainly been positive for my skin too. Favourite Food Blogs

The internet is great for inspiration in the kitchen. I am trying my best to feed our family a diet that is nourishing. I always tell my kids that you need to fuel it well so that it can perform and do the things you want it to do. Feeding it junk will make you feel like well, junk. It does not always happen but I make veggies a priority and try and teach the kids to listen to how they feel. If you feel sick after eating something, it’s not for you. Simple as that.

I have a few go to blogs for recipes that I thought I would share.

Well Nourished is a blog by Georgia  that makes cooking simple and has many variations to her recipes depending on intolerances or allergies. We love her banana bread and recipe ‘Meat free Monday’ (aka lentils) if you need dinner on the table in 20 mins. I have both her e-books and use them both. Fabulous

Thermobexta is full of wonderful recipes thay I make in my thermomix and has my go- to recipe for Tomato Ketchup. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

The Healthy Chef Teresa Cutter writes for the Sunday life Magazine. I love her granola recipe and always make a batch each week based on her web recipe. I like how her recipes are categorised into breakfast, lunch, dinner etc when you are looking for inspiration for a particular meal or want to try something a bit different

Skinny Mixers has such a great range of free recipes (thermomix based) for Asian, Mexican, Indian food. Perfect if you like to cook food with flavour! The satay is a must.

Quirky cooking   Love Jo’s range of recipes. We absolutely love her mayonaise and is definitely our go to for that

I am always keen to learn new recipes so if there is another blog that you would like to share, please share it!

Essential Oils that won’t break the bank

There are many affordable Essential Oils that are under $25! Some oils are expensive due to the amount of plant required to produce the oil. The more plant required the more expensive the oil but good news is that there are many oils that are less expensive that have many uses. When I had a look at the prices and which oils were under $AUD25 (wholesale) I found that I actually had quite a few of them. Each 5ml bottle has 75-80 drops and each 15ml bottle has 250. Often all is needed is 1-2 drops so each bottle will go a long way. 5ml where stated, otherwise 15ml bottles under $25

Cedarwood

Beautiful woodsy aroma. Blends with Lavendar for promoting a calm restful sleep. can be diffused for aromatherapy benefits including respiratory support. Cedarwood and Rosemary can help encourgae healthy hair growth

Lemon

One of the most versatile oils. Powerful detoxification agent. Diffused provides a refreshing uplifting scent. Added to marinades provides a pop of flavour. Use as an airfreshner in a spray bottle or on your benches as a cleaner making the most of it’s antibacterial properties

Rosemary

Crisp fragrance. Rosemary on your scalp will promote flake-free, glossy locks. It helps stimulate circulation to encocurage healthy hair growth. I use it in a hair spray! Combined with lemon in a diffuser can provide concentration support. Can be used in cooking where rosemary is required, used as a compress for muscle pain and stiffness, inhaled to help clear your sinuses, the list goes on. Not suitable if pregnant or epileptic or high blood pressure.

Orange

This oil imparts feeling of warmth and happiness. Can help eliminate toxins. We love to diffuse it. One if my boys loves a drop on a tissue inside his pillow case as he goes to sleep. of course it is another culinary oil and can be used in smoothies, marinades anything that needs an orange flavour. I love it in raw chocolate

Nutmeg (5ml)

Has a spicy aroma and is able to stimulate the mind while refreshing the air. A favourite in kitchens and in the diffuser. Blends beautifully with orange, rosemary, bergamot, tea tree to name a few. Not suitable if epileptic, caution if pregnant.

Lemongrass

This has to be one of my favourites, although I do have many. A fresh aroma that is revitalising. Helpful at repelling insects- always in my bug spray. Popular ingredient in asian dishes. Refreshing aroma in the diffuser with the added bonus or deterring insects.

Ginger (5ml)

Spicy taste when added to food. Is soothing for digestive discomfort and can help with cold and flu symtpoms. Diffuse or massage

Spearmint (5ml)

Milder than peppermint, it has a sweet fragrance ideal for use in cleaning and to diffuse to freshen the air. As a flavouring in cooking it has a sweet minty taste. Can be used to replace peppermint in many instances and is a safer choice for children. I love it in the diffuser with lemon in combination.

Lime

An irresistable scent that has the ability to eliminate moodiness. Great natural air freshener. Blended with grapefruit, lemon and orange creates an uplifting and positive mix to diffuse.

Aside from cedarwood all these oils can be used in cooking. For the month of November Young Living is offering a free cook book demonstrating how to use Young Living  oils in your kitchen to new members who purchase a premium starter kit. If you would like to read some more about essential oils and/or purchase a premium starter kit, read my Essential Oils page or send me an email at belindajforsyth@gmail.com and I will be in touch.
