3 Reasons not to use Bleach

Bleach for many of us means Chlorine Bleach. It has been used to disinfect surfaces and remove stains and whiten clothes. Chlorine bleach is typically a solution of sodium hydrochloride. There are so many reasons not to use it in your home and here is my take on the top 3.

  1. It is bad for your health. As reported in the Sydney Morning herald Passive exposure to Chlorine bleach has been linked to an increase in cases of Flu, tonsillitis and other infections in school aged children. This Research was published in the British Medical Journal’s Occupational and Environmental Medicine and was performed across 3 countries and included over 9000 children. Another study published by the American Journal of critical care medicine, concluded that Women cleaning at home or working as occupational cleaners had accelerated decline in lung function, suggesting that exposures related to cleaning activities may constitute a risk to long-term respiratory health(source). This is such a worry for many women and men who are the responsible party for cleaning their homes in addition to the cleaning workforce. Another potential problem of using Chlorine Bleach is that it can react with other Cleaning products producing toxic gases, chloramine.
  2. It is bad for the Environment. Chlorine is released into waterways via sewage. Once it reaches the water, chlorine reacts with other minerals and elements to form a host of dangerous toxins. These toxins, including dioxins, furams and PCDDs are often referred to as “persistent organic pollutants” because they linger in the water or soil and take many years to disappear. (source)
  3. There are other, safer alternatives. How do I whiten my clothes and clean my home? the answer is Hydrogen Peroxide or Sodium Percarbonate and plant based cleaners. Hydrogen peroxide available from your local Pharmacy, or the powdered form Sodium Percarbonate ( purchase here). Hydrogen peroxide is a double Hydrogen Oxygen compound that is used as an oxidiser, bleaching agent and antiseptic. Sodium Percarbonate breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and soda ash in water and in powdered form makes it an easy addition to laundry. Thieves household cleaner is my all time favourite plant based cleaner that actually works infused with a blend of essential oils that are perfect for cleaning your home.

For liquid bleach try this recipe I love  sodium percarbonate as I can easily add a tsp to my washing detergent and my whites are brighter. A little bit goes a long way. You will also be avoiding synthetic fragrance as most supermarket products have synthetic fragrance included- I only use Essential oils as synthetic fragrance can have any number of chemicals and are known endocrine disruptors! (source)

Removing stains- try some bi-carb soda and half a lemon. One of the simplest low tox cleaners you can try and you probably have both ingredients in your kitchen. If you don’t have lemons try some Lemon Essential Oil. I use this frequently to clean my sink and it smells great.

Surface disinfection. I get it, you have been cooking, maybe with chicken or other meat (if you choose) and you want to make sure there are no nasties growing on your bench. For this I have a spray bottle with  Thieves Household Cleaner. Do I need a study to verify it? Well actually there are many which show anti-microbial effects of essential oils, like this one. or watch here Did I ever check about Bleach or the health effects? No I did not, but I wish I did!

What is it? Thieves Household Cleaner is a plant based essential oil infused concentrate that I use to clean my bathroom, kitchen, dishwasher, car, washing machine, floors, everything. The other thing I like about it is it is biodegradable and complies with EPA standards. It is economical and it works. You can even clean your dog with it.

Home Made Lip Balms

A hand bag essential, lip balms keep your lip soft. A little while ago I checked out the ingredients in a store bought version and here is what I found

  • Oxybenzone- derived from petroleum is a UV absorber, associated with endocrine disruption, produces damaging reactive oxygen species upon exposure to sunlight
  • Mentyl Anthranilate- synthetic UV absorber not assessed for safety in cosmetics. produces damaging reative oxygen species upone exposure to sunlight
  • Fragrance- synthetic scent which contains phthalates
  • parabens- synthetic preservatives- suspected endocrine disruption, contact dermatitis and skin irritation in some people

(source: Info from the Chemical maze App)

I am not happy about any of these ingredients going on my lips or my families for that matter. Here is the good news. It is really easy to make your own and the recipes are good enough to eat. Chances are you will already have some of these ingredients in your pantry. Here are a couple of recipes and places I have sourced my ingredients from. These recipes are great for nourishing your lips and are quick to make.

Choc Mint Lip Balms ( approx 18 tubes)

  • 15 g beeswax
  • 15g Shea Butter
  • 15g Cacao Butter
  • 15g Coconut Oil
  • 1 tsp cacao Powder ( or more)
  • 18 drops Peppermint Essential Oil

Melt beeswax, coconut oil and butters in a glass pyrex dish over a pot of simmering water. Once melted, remove from heat and stir through Cacao Powder and Peppermint Essential oil. Use syringe to fill lip tubes and set in the fridge.

Lavender Lip balms ( approx 18 tubes)

  • 20g Shea butter
  • 20g avocado Oil
  • 20g Beeswax
  • 15 drops lavender oil

Melt beeswax, butter and oil together in pyrex dish. Remove from heat and stir in lavender Essential oil. Syringe into tubes and set in the fridge

Tips

  • Use a ramekin to stand your lip tubes in
  • pick up a syringe from your local pharmacy
  • decorate your lip tubes with washi tape
  • work fast before the lip balm sets. You can always re-melt
  • make sure lip tubes are wound down fully before filling

Supplies

  • Lip Tubes you will find online. I purchased mine from Aussie candle supplies
  • Butters and Beeswax try Biome
  • Oils from your local supermarket
  • Essential Oils from Young Living. Get started here with a Premium Starter kit (Lavender and Peppermint are in this popular kit)
  • Cacao pwder and other great wholefoods from The wholefood collective

Foaming Hand Soap

I make my own foaming hand soap and it is really easy ! Simply buy a bottle to re-use over and over again or re-purpose on old foaming pump bottle.  In my low tox journey I have been looking at ingredients and trying to avoid

  • skin irritants- think SLS
  • endocrine disruptors-triclosan- an anti-bacterial agent ( banned in the US but not in Australia for personal use), synthetic fragrance i.e phthalates, parfum
  • cheap preservatives- parabens, also a known endocrine disruptor which have other health concerns too.

With just a few ingredients you can make your own

Foaming Hand Soap
Here is what you will need

  • Dr Bronne’s Castille Soap- I buy mine at Nourished life
  • Water
  • Essential Oils of Choice- I like Thieves or Purification, from Young Living
  • Olive or Almond oil
  • Foaming hand soap container: try here,  or here (pictured)

Fill soap pump 1/4 full with Castille Soap.

Add 1 tsp Olive or v6 (this is optional but provides great moisturing). Next add essential oils- for 250mls I use 10-15 drops. Swirl to combine.

Top with water leaving enough room at the top to attach the pump. If you like a thick lather increase the amount of castille soap.

This is seriously easy, will take you less than 5 minutes and you can even teach your kids to do it and better still they won’t be using toxins on their skin!

If DIY is not your thing, Thieves Foaming hand soap is ready to go smells delicious and will nourish your hands without the toxins. It can be purchased from Young Living as part of the Healthy Home Premium Starter Kit here

Inspiring teens to make Better Choices

Last weekend I had the privilege of sharing with a group of teenagers how to make some essential oil Rollers/ real perfume and some infused Bath salts. I know that teenage girls love the beautiful scents that come in body products, I was one once. The aromas can make you feel good and boost your mood, thank you our amazing olfactory system!!

As a medical household we receive the Australian Medical Association magazine VicDoc. I was reading it the other day (October/November 2017) and came across an article ‘Endocrine disrupting chemicals and fertility’ I was so excited to find this! Now you might be thinking I don’t plan on having kids for awhile or I am done with kids or maybe you never plan to have them at all BUT these EDC’s can interfere with the body’s normal functioning in both men and women. This effects everyone! Finally this was being published in a medical magazine.

In regards to fertility EDC’s can have negative affects by mimicking and/or blocking oestrogen and testosterone. This can cause changes in hormone levels, decreased sperm and egg quality and damage to sperm DNA, increase risk of miscarriage and early menopause.

It is becoming more and more evident that Endocrine Dusrupting Chemicals (EDC’s) are damaging our bodies and can also accumulate and be passed onto the next generation. As there are many  EDC’s in every day products sometimes it is helpful to be armed with some info to help you sort though your cupboard and replace with better choices.

EDC’s can be found everywhere and it is hard to eliminate them but you can REDUCE your exposure. They can be found in air, soil, water and man-made products. Here are some EDC’s

  • Bisphenols (BPA/BPS/BPF)
  • Phthalates
  • Parabens
  • Pesticides, herbices amd insecticides
  • Heavy metals

Ok so you might look at that list and go where do I start. If you can choose organic food and/or produce from spray free farms. Phthalates make plastic flexible (opt for glass or stainless steel containers and drink bottles if possible) and amoung other things are found in synthetic fragrance. In synthetic fragrance, phthalates act as a solvent to make the scent last. As reported in the Syndey Morning Herald, there are increasing concerns on the use of synthetic fragrance due to the fact that it is a self regulated industry and you don’t actually know what is in it! Parabens are used as a preservative in personal care products, anti-bacterial products and cosmetics.

Essential Oils are pure plants ectracts which can be used in personal care products without the need for synthetics. They will lift your mood, promote relaxation and a quiet mind and lots of other great feelings. They smell great and your teens will LOVE them. Here are a few recipes that I know you will love and can use with your teenagers. A little bit of Essential oil goes a long way. Young Living oils are super concentrated and you don’t need much. If you don’t have Essential Oils yet, you are truly missing out!

Infused Bath Salts

Super easy. Mix  1 cup Epsom and 1 cup Himalayan salts with 1 cup bi- carb soda. Add 10 drops Stress-Away essential oils. Mix well. Store in a glass jar. Run a bath and soak. Great way to relax, wind down, increase your absorption of minerals (84 in the Himalayan salts) and magnesium.

Focus Roller

Rather than using s stimulant that can have negative affects on your body try this recipe. In a 10ml Roller, add 2 drops of Lemon, 2 drops Rosemary and 2 drops Lemon and top with fractionated coconut oil or Young Living v6 As I explained to the girls this is your study buddy or your homework helper. Apply to pulse points

Calm Roller

In a 10ml Roller bottle add 3 drops Lavender and 3 drops of Orange and top with fractionated coconut oil or v6. This is a great way to inspire feelings of calm and bright and smell great at the same time. Apply to pulse points

Lastly I can not forget to mention make-up! This is one thing that women have used for centuries to enhance their natural features, which is exactly what I believe make-up should be. When your daughter has her ballet performance, debutante ball or just wants to cover a few blemishes and enhance her appearance choose Savvy Minerals. Free from harmful ingredients, it won’t clog your pores and there are no endocrine disrupting synthetic fragrances. Savvy Minerals is exactly that a mineral based make-up range using mineral pigments. Stunning colours, beautiful brushes and lipsticks and lip glosses to die for! Read about savvy Minerals here

Nourishing Night time Face Serum

A little while ago, I started making a face serum as I had read about the great benefits it can have for your skin. I absolutely love it and use it daily. My skin has improved and making my own is economical and I customise it each time. I apply 4 drops of the serum after cleansing and follow with a moisturiser before bed.  I have had rave reviews over this super simple face serum you can make at home. Go on give it a try.

Here is what you need

Jojoba Oil– a golden liquid wax that mimics the skin’s natural oils, penetrating deep into the skin’s layers.

Rosehip Oil– absorbed quickly into the skin, it is pressed from seeds. Perfect for mature and sunburnt skin. Beneficial for healing scars

Lavender Essential oil;  Fabulous for all skin. Lavender has been used for centuries in personal products not only for it’s beautiful scent but it’s ability to support skin.

Frankincense Essential oil; promotes the regeneration of healthy cells, a powerful anti-aging oil.

Copaiba Essential oil; has astringent properties that help tighten the skin. Copaiba infuses the skin with powerful nutrients and organic compounds that can eliminate the appearance of blisters, marks, and pimples

Use a  glass bottle with a dropper in it (like these or try Centaurpackaging.com) I use  a 2% concentration of Essential Oils, which is recommended for daily use. Download dilution chart here

For more information for Essential oils suitable for skin care please read here

Basic Face serum

20ml dropper bottle 12 drops essential oil

4 dops Lavender    Essential Oil*                                                                                                                   4 Drops Frankincense   Essential Oil*                                                                                                        4 Drops Copaiba Essential Oil*

When mixing your serum add the essential oils to the bottle first, lightly swirl to combine before adding the carrier oil.

Fill with Jojoba oil or carrier oil of choice

For the winter month’s I use a half half mixture of jojoba and reship oil for extra nourishing. Fill with 1/2 Rosehip and 1/2 Jojoba oil, purchase these here

Other Oils to consider

Cedarwood Essential Oil; has anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, reduces skin irritations, promoting relaxation and balance.

Myrrh Essential oil; moisturising and soothing, great for ageing skin

Geranium Essential oil; increases circulation, tighten and smooths skin and is an excellent choice for problem skin, not to mention it smells divine!

This is not a complete list, there are so many fabulous oils, but start with what you have and you will reap the benefits!

Yoga- Healthy mind, Healthy body

Yoga has many benefits for the body. Health benefits may include increased fitness and normalisation of blood pressure. It is a known antidote of stress. Reported lower levels of stress, increased health and wellbeing from regular practice occurs as the practice of concentrating on poses and breath acts as a form of meditation. This all sounds good to me!

Diffusing essential oils in Yoga can enhance the uplifting experience when practising yoga. Some yoga studios are using essential oil based sprays to wipe down their yoga mats

For me getting to a yoga studio is not always practical as a parent. I have started practicing yoga at home and there have been a numerous benefits. I can practice any time, my children join in and I use my diffuser to enhance the experience. I am able to work on my strength and flexibility at home and I ALWAYS feel better afterwards

There are a few things I have been using to make my home yoga experience work for me.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Yoga Studio App  I recently purchased this app my iPhone and I love it.  Follow one fo their classes or customise your own. Not particularly tech savvy I have worked out how to mirror the screen to my TV and I have my own private class with the convenience of being at home.

I was not keen on using a Yoga mat that was made of synthetics. Recently I purchased a Cork Leaf yoga mat.  The first Australian company making natural yoga mats using recycled cork backed by natural tree rubber. Naturally anti-microbial, smooth and grippy. No need for a cleaning spray, simply let dry and roll away. I love that it feels cool under your feet. They also plant a tree for every yoga mat purchased! More expensive than some others on the market, the fact that it was natural was a big winner for me and as I am not paying for classes I felt that this offset the price. Definitely worth it. However now everyone loves the mat I might have to purchase another.

Essential oils you might like to try to diffuse are Bergamot for its uplifting properties, Frankincense* for its strenghtening and centering, Lavender* for calming and peppermint* for clear breathing. There are so many more options and sometimes it is a personal preference. Blending a couple of drops of different oils works well too. I choose Young Living Essential oils and you can read more why here

In our busy lives, I hope you can take some time out for yourself and benefit your mind and body by practicing yoga.

Essential Oils that won’t break the bank

There are many affordable Essential Oils that are under $25! Some oils are expensive due to the amount of plant required to produce the oil. The more plant required the more expensive the oil but good news is that there are many oils that are less expensive that have many uses. When I had a look at the prices and which oils were under $AUD25 (wholesale) I found that I actually had quite a few of them. Each 5ml bottle has 75-80 drops and each 15ml bottle has 250. Often all is needed is 1-2 drops so each bottle will go a long way. 5ml where stated, otherwise 15ml bottles under $25

Cedarwood

Beautiful woodsy aroma. Blends with Lavendar for promoting a calm restful sleep. can be diffused for aromatherapy benefits including respiratory support. Cedarwood and Rosemary can help encourgae healthy hair growth

Lemon

One of the most versatile oils. Powerful detoxification agent. Diffused provides a refreshing uplifting scent. Added to marinades provides a pop of flavour. Use as an airfreshner in a spray bottle or on your benches as a cleaner making the most of it’s antibacterial properties

Rosemary

Crisp fragrance. Rosemary on your scalp will promote flake-free, glossy locks. It helps stimulate circulation to encocurage healthy hair growth. I use it in a hair spray! Combined with lemon in a diffuser can provide concentration support. Can be used in cooking where rosemary is required, used as a compress for muscle pain and stiffness, inhaled to help clear your sinuses, the list goes on. Not suitable if pregnant or epileptic or high blood pressure.

Orange

This oil imparts feeling of warmth and happiness. Can help eliminate toxins. We love to diffuse it. One if my boys loves a drop on a tissue inside his pillow case as he goes to sleep. of course it is another culinary oil and can be used in smoothies, marinades anything that needs an orange flavour. I love it in raw chocolate

Nutmeg (5ml)

Has a spicy aroma and is able to stimulate the mind while refreshing the air. A favourite in kitchens and in the diffuser. Blends beautifully with orange, rosemary, bergamot, tea tree to name a few. Not suitable if epileptic, caution if pregnant.

Lemongrass

This has to be one of my favourites, although I do have many. A fresh aroma that is revitalising. Helpful at repelling insects- always in my bug spray. Popular ingredient in asian dishes. Refreshing aroma in the diffuser with the added bonus or deterring insects.

Ginger (5ml)

Spicy taste when added to food. Is soothing for digestive discomfort and can help with cold and flu symtpoms. Diffuse or massage

Spearmint (5ml)

Milder than peppermint, it has a sweet fragrance ideal for use in cleaning and to diffuse to freshen the air. As a flavouring in cooking it has a sweet minty taste. Can be used to replace peppermint in many instances and is a safer choice for children. I love it in the diffuser with lemon in combination.

Lime

An irresistable scent that has the ability to eliminate moodiness. Great natural air freshener. Blended with grapefruit, lemon and orange creates an uplifting and positive mix to diffuse.

Aside from cedarwood all these oils can be used in cooking. For the month of November Young Living is offering a free cook book demonstrating how to use Young Living  oils in your kitchen to new members who purchase a premium starter kit. If you would like to read some more about essential oils and/or purchase a premium starter kit, read my Essential Oils page or send me an email at belindajforsyth@gmail.com and I will be in touch.

Thieves Household cleaner

thieves-household-cleaner

This product has to be one of the most versatile cleaners there is. I wanted to write about it to open your eyes to the number of uses there are from one bottle of Concentrate.

Firstly Thieves Household  Cleaner is made from Young Living’s Thieves Blend of Essential Oils- Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Cinnamon bark, Clove, Lemon essential oils and plant and mineral based ingredients. It contains surfactants sodium methyl 2-sulfolaurate and disodium 2-sulfolaurate which are made from renewable sources, biodegradable and septic safe. I have looked up all the individual ingredients on the Environmental working group website and they have no warnings.Unlike other cleaners you can buy from the supermarket, all the ingredients are on the bottle!

It is safe for any member of my family to use which is great when the kids are helping out.

This really is one product with many uses

The concentrate can be used in the following ratios water/cleaner ratio. Check the back of your bottle.

NB 1 capful=10ml

  • 30/1 Most cleaning applications
  • 15/1 Heavy degreasing
  • 50/1 light Degreasing

I have a 450ml spray bottle and add one capful of cleaner and top up with water for my shower, sinks, toilets, benches. I spray and then wipe off with a damp microfibre cloth. Showers will benefit from leaving for 5-10 mins before wiping/rinsing off.

Carpet

Here is a before and after photo of a very quick spray and blot with a microfibre cloth on my carpet. I was so impressed at how well it came up. I used 1/2 cap in a 450ml spray bottle, sprayed carpet, left for a few minutes and rubbed with a damp microfibre cloth.

Dishwasher

To keep your dishwasher in great working order, add one capful to the dispenser and wash on empty on the hottest setting. It can also be used as a replacement for your dishwasher detergent.

Jewellery Cleaner

Avoid paying for your jeweller to clean your rings and do it yourself. Add one capful to 1/2 cup vodka and soak rings for 20 mins. Clean with a soft brush and rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Sparkling jewellery with minimum effort. Keep your cleaner labelled in a jar for next time.

Windows/ Glass

Add 1/2 cap to a 450ml spray bottle with 2-3 drops lemon essential oil. Top up with water Spray and wipe with a microfibre cloth for a streak free finish.

Bathrooms

Use a  450ml spray bottle with 1 capful , or 1 capful to 250ml for heavier application. Spray and leave  for 10 minutes before using a small brush to clean grout if required. wipe with a microfibre cloth. Rinse and dry

Stain remover

For a stain remover spray, in a spray bottle(450ml) half fill with vinegar, add 1 capful of Thieves Household cleaner, 10 drops of Lemon Essential Oil and then top up with water. Lightly shake before spraying clothing

Stubborn stains on ceramics or grout

To eliminate stains from your bath, sink, toilet or ceramic cookware use 1/4 cup bi-carb soda mixed with enough cleaner (about 1 capful) to form a paste, scrub with a brush and rinse.

Car Wash

As this product is an excellent degreaser I recently used to to clean my car. Add a capful to a bucket of water. I scrubbed our rubber mats and cleaned the wheels with ease.

General cleaner

Using half a capful in a 450ml spray bottle you can clean kids toys, walls, tables, benches, yoga matt, gym equipment, cap upholstery, stainless steel, inside the fridge, the list is endless.

With a wholesale membership, a 426ml bottle of Thieves cleaner($39.50)  will give you approximately  42 x 450ml bottles of cleaner! using approximately 10ml of concentrate per application. That is $0.92 per bottle/application. This bottle will last at least 6 months probably longer

A 1.8l($139.80) bottle will give you 180 x 450ml bottles of cleaner. That is $0.77 per bottle/application. This bottle I expect would last the average family at least a year and a half!
